10 Tips to Meet Someone While Traveling
by Linda Rains

The single set among us already know that it's tough enough to sneak into a restaurant solo without so-called sympathetic gazes from well-meaning couples. But with spring on the horizon and summer close behind, we've got a whole new dilemma: Do we dare spend a week in a strange new land without a sweetie at our side? Or does being single mean our warmer months must be spent close to home? You've got two choices: sit at home and sulk; or toss the attitude, pack your bags, and get yourself out there.

No matter where you go, you're likely to see a whole new view of sights not available in your hometown ("sights" being open for your interpretation AND intentions). Take your choice of outdoor adventure, sporting venues, even casual laid-back park attractions. Wherever you go, just take the wheel and plot your course for adventure -- and meet someone new while enjoying the sights and sounds of that chosen city.

1. Be a good sport. Gals, if you know guys like I know guys... then you know they love to gather in groups for spectator sports. And if traveling to nearly any city, you're sure to find a major or minor league team with a local following. Baseball season is fast approaching... get your ticket, find your group of guys making a spectacle while spectating, and inquire about the best strategy to achieve a "homerun."

2. Follow the instructions. Nearly any cross-country outing offers the opportunity to learn something (and someone) new. Colorado: skiing and snowboarding. Florida: SCUBA diving. Hawaii: surfing. Anywhere: golf and tennis. You get the drift. Enroll yourself wherever you go for a look at the local "action." Buddy up with that cute co-learner, then follow up with a little after-hours studying.

3. A walk in the park. Take a stroll yourself through any city's central park area and you're bound to find boys and girls en masse playing Frisbee, hackey sack, catch and more. Up and down the sidewalks you'll find joggers, inline skaters and walkers. Bring along your own equipment and ask that cute gal for a lesson!

4. Fly me to the moon. If traveling by air, it all starts in the airport. Don't believe me? Arrive early and take a stroll past gates for Colorado destinations, for instance. You'll find groups of men eager for their end-of-winter ski trip. Girls too. Travel during the busiest of times (avoid early mornings and late nights) and find other solo travelers like yourself eager for friendly conversation. Linger by east/west coast, pacific northwest, and even international destinations for best luck.

5. Fore your pleasure. Somehow, not quite obvious to me, golf has taken this country by storm -- both as a participant and spectator sport. Whether you consider yourself a newbie, novice, or expert, find the area's most popular driving range and grab yourself a bucket of balls. Take your best shot and you'll soon notice several solo "swingers" nearby with plenty of tips or casual conversation.

6. Batter up! Similarly perplexing, batting cages are gaining in popularity for both singles and new daters. So while skimming those yellow pages for the best driving ranges, make note of nearby batting cages as well. Tackle both in one day, and if nothing else... you've had a great workout!

7. Cruisin' for a two-some. If you're on the lookout to meet someone new, a Caribbean cruise is as near to a "sure thing" as you'll ever find. Once onboard, you'll find nightly dances, parties, dining, gambling, games -- and plenty of singles. During daytime, enjoy onshore activities like shopping, snorkeling, sight-seeing and more. Interested? Contact your local travel agent for more -- and don't forget to specify an interest in singles cruises.
