Keep
It Clean, Please
It's What Your Desktop Deserves
Toss
your trash out the window more than once in Texas and
those Rangers will nab you for as much as $2,000. Try
it in Virginia and you're out $2,500. Ditch a soda can
in the wrong place at the wrong time in some states and,
suddenly, you're better known as inmate #567824. Or, at
least, you have a new financial commitment to your friendly
area loan officer.
Oh,
if only the same were true of your PC. No longer would
you casually drop that shortcut to an application you
may use just once or twice. You'd think twice before lazily
saving that new document to your main screen. And it'd
never cross your mind to drag that latest batch of photo
files directly to your Desktop.
Fortunately
for you, Microsoft has yet to announce plans for a Windows
cleanup enforcement brigade, and for the time being, you're
safe from Desktop pollution fines. But you should know
that this habit of crowding your Desktop with icons violates
the very principle that is Windows XP: simple to use,
with a clutter-free design. So Microsoft has once again
proven its savvy for anticipating user needs by arming
WinXP with a tool that does the dirty work for you. Meet
the Desktop Cleanup Wizard, which manages your Desktop
icons, tracks exactly when each was last clicked, and
stores them safely away from view until needed. Consider
the Desktop Cleanup Wizard your personal maid who cleans
up your unused icons and stores them safely in a Desktop
folder. Cleanup takes place every 60 days or at your command
through your Display Properties panel.
