What To Do When Your Display Needs A Makeover

it: looks do matter. In fact, they're all that matter.
Turns out that image really is everything and beauty,
while it may run only skin deep, is what counts.
No, we're not suggesting that you join a gym, replace
the wardrobe, and hire a beauty consultant. We're
after your PC's monitor, also known as the eyes
of your computer, and that baby may be desperately
in need of a makeover.
The
display that's strapped beside your CPU rarely gets
the attention it deserves. More than likely, it
came bundled in a PC package, and the last time
you explored its settings was the day you hooked
the video cable to your CPU's backside. You can
easily adjust volume, brightness, and contrast,
and if pressed, you can navigate the OSD (on-screen
display), but to this day you remain perplexed by
terms such as degauss, refresh rate, and moirŽ (no,
that's not a typo).

Most
monitors require little care to live a long life, but
even the best have been known to act up, causing eyestrain,
halting production on your Desktop, or just plain driving
you nuts. CRTs (cathode-ray tubes) are more susceptible
to problems than LCDs (liquid-crystal displays), which
boast a relatively trouble-free viewing experience (though
they do have their own troubles, which we address later
in the ÒLCDs Aim To PleaseÓ section). Remember, your monitor
houses enough voltage to injure or kill an untrained intruder,
even when unplugged. Unless properly trained, resist the
urge to open the case and leave the inside jobs to the
pros. Ê
